Laser Photonics: Made in the USA

A US company has positioned itself as the only domestic manufacturer of a flat-bed fibre-laser cutting system.
Laser Photonics (Lake Mary, FL) supplies the Titan series of fibre-laser cutting machines, a range of multipurpose flat-bed systems equipped with a high-power fibre-laser and a single-pallet shuttle table. And it is currently the only US manufacturer of such a system, according to the company's marketing manager Maureen McHale.

"Fibre lasers are still a relatively new technology," McHale told optics.org. "They represent a real improvement in technology for a variety of applications, and are becoming the new industry standard. However, many manufacturers and job shops still haven't embraced the technology and cling to their CO2 machines."

The company's expertise in fibre-lasers stems from its background in the supply of systems for laser marking, cutting and engraving applications, and experience in working with lasers in R&D environments. "Along the way we acquired an understanding of how to physically build workable systems and incorporate lasers into industrial applications," said McHale.

Other US companies supplying the industrial-laser sector have not embraced fibre lasers in the same way, according to McHale: "Fibre lasers have not historically been a major focus for US manufacturers. Consequently most manufacturers of such systems are European companies, as US suppliers currently do not have the combination of technical know-how and ability to build the equipment needed."
The only other sources for similar flat-bed fibre-laser machines at present are one Italian and one Indian company (Air Liquide and Addprint India Enterprises), but McHale indicates that they differ from the Titan series in the way they manipulate the workpiece. "The Italian and Indian machines use ball and screw mechanisms, while the Titan employs a linear drive motion system. This allows for higher speeds during cutting, and can deliver the high levels of accuracy and repeatability required in flat-sheet cutting and the flat-panel-display industry."
At present, Laser Photonics claims its order books remain healthy despite the economic climate. "In the first quarter of 2009 our sales are up by over 250% compared to the total sales volume of 2008. Many manufacturers are using this down-turn in the economy to beef up their production lines, and investigate ways to lower their operating costs, use less energy and increase throughput."
These attractions guarantee that Laser Photonics will soon be facing competition in its niche. "We recognize that within the next 5-10 years other US manufacturers will try and compete, but we are pushing to stay ahead of any possible competition," said McHale. "Being the only manufacturer of a product in the US is a big thing."

Laser Application Helps Keep Bumble Bee Tuna Stay Fresh

Laser Photonics’ application engineers were recently contacted by Bumble Bee Tuna to improve the labeling of the expiration dates on their canned seafood products. The seafood giant was looking for the fastest and clearest way to mark these dates in order to increase production times and convey the information easily to customers.

Our engineers quickly found the solution by using a 20W Fiber Laser System to mark the expiration dates clearly onto the packaging itself without any damage. The dates were etched onto the thin plastic in one pass using a 160mm lens. This process can vary from etching 15 inches per second to 35 inches per second depending on the type of font being used. The average cycle time per can was .480 seconds. Using the same laser we can mark clearly on the different color packaging (Clear, black, green and blue) which will increase throughput of the production process. The clear marking will also ensure easy visibility for customers around the world reinforcing that Bumble Bee is the freshest canned seafood products in the industry.

“This is a very interesting application for our fiber laser systems” stated Ryan Semmer, Industrial Product Marketing Manager for Laser Photonics. “Clearly marked expiration dates are extremely important in the canned food industry, and now our lasers can help speed up the production while making it easier for the customer to read the information with a permanent mark. Our next step will be to quickly mark directly onto the can itself at these speeds."

The system used for this application is a 20W i-Series Fiber Laser Marker. The i-Series is available in Q-switch or CW configurations. It delivers a diffraction limited (M2<1.05)> 1.05) laser beam directly to the worksite via a metal sheathed single mode fiber cable. These compact service-free lasers are designed to operate under high shock, vibration and dust conditions, with relatively high humidity and temperatures. They do not require routine replacement parts or materials; they require only a low voltage power source. Wall-plug efficiencies up to 50% result in a compact size, reduced utilities, and trouble-free air cooling. Fiber-to-fiber architecture means a robust, monolithic design with no optics to align or maintain, no mechanics to stabilize, and with the focusable power and high power densities needed for the most demanding applications.

Only Company in US Making Fiber Laser Cutting Systems - Laser Photonics

Laser Photonics, the industry leader in developing high-tech Fiber and C02 laser systems for marking, cutting and engraving applications announced today that it is still the only company in the United States manufacturing a flat bed fiber laser cutting system.

One year ago, Laser Photonics’ introduced a new system to its product line, the Titan Series. This machine was Laser Photonics’ first multipurpose fiber laser cutting machine equipped with a high-powered, energy efficient fiber laser and a single pallet shuttle table. It was also, the only one of its kind manufactured in the United States.

On the eve of unveiling a new redesigned Titan Series, Laser Photonics announces that it is still the only manufacturer in the United States to have such a machine on the assembly line.

“Being the only manufacturer of a product in the United States is a big thing,” said Maureen McHale, Laser Photonics Corporate Marketing and Public Relations Manager. “And, there are only two other companies in the world, one in Italy and one in India, who are able to build this type of system today.”

The Titan is used to cut materials in an industrial manufacturing setting. By directing the high power of the fiber laser, by computer, at the material to be cut, the material will either melt, burn or vaporize away leaving an edge with a high quality finish.

Fiber lasers are still a relatively new technology. Having been found to be a cost-effective, reliable, high throughput means to process flat sheet metals such as aluminum, stainless steel, and titanium these lasers represent a real improvement in technology for a variety of applications, and are becoming the new industry standard. However, many manufacturers and job shops still haven’t embraced this new technology, clinging to their outdated, slow and expensive to run, CO2 machines.

“What do I say to people who ask why should they switch to a fiber laser system? That’s easy. The Titan has a lighter weight design and the fastest cutting speed on the market. It has the lowest operating costs among all laser types, requires no optical system alignment, laser service or laser replacement parts. It’s virtually maintenance free and simply the best industrial laser cutting system available,” said McHale. “It’s also the only one that’s made in the United States.”

Developing laser marking, laser cutting and laser engraving systems for precision material processing industries, Laser Photonics is leading the way with innovative fiber laser and CO2 laser systems. Our laser machines are used by manufacturers in the automotive, aerospace, industrial, defense, electronic and medical industries around the world. Laser Photonics in the news....

In the February 2009 Issue of Automotive Design and Production...

Fast Stainless Marking
According to the application engineers from Laser Photonics (http://www.laserphotonics.com/; Lake Mary, FL), Q-switched fiber lasers are superior for marking on stainless steel than CO2 lasers. The reason: because stainless steel is reflective, it is necessary to coat the stainless steel surface with a "laser marking material" (LMM). This is sprayed on, allowed to dry, then the CO2 lasing commences. Afterward, the surface has to be cleaned. However, with a Q-switched fiber laser, such as the company's 20-W FiberTower XP, no LMM is required, so the marking process is fast. In on application, they were able to mark at a rate of five inches per minute.

Lost Dog Finds Way Home Thanks to Laser Photonics Fiber Laser

Orlando, FL, April 17, 2009 – According to The Humane Society of the United States, there are approximately 74.8 million owned dogs in the United States. Of the dogs lost in the United States every year, only an estimated 10 percent ever find their homes again. One of the easiest ways to keep a pet safe is to ensure the pet wears identification tags at all times. Tags should include a local contact number, as well as a number for a friend or out-of-town relative. Proper identification tags are the pet’s ticket home if he becomes lost.

Laser Photonics, a leader in fiber laser technology, has partnered with dog tag distributors in a nationwide effort to educate and empower pet owners everywhere to help keep their pets safe. Finding a faster, easier, less expensive way to produce dog tags for its customers, distributors are purchasing Laser Photonics’ cutting-edge Fiber Tower XP systems which can be integrated into any production line. These systems are safe, compact, and service-free, designed to meet individual marking needs with the ability to mark a wide variety of materials using many different techniques.

2009 Laser Equipment Stimulus Package: Enormous Savings!

2009 has suddenly become a great year to invest in your business. Due to The Economic Stimulus Act and the Section 179 deduction, which has been extended through December 31st, 2009, business’ purchasing power has been significantly increased when it comes to buying new laser equipment.

Business owners who acquire equipment for their business: machinery, computers, and other tangible goods, usually prefer to deduct the cost in a single tax year, rather than a little at a time over a number of years. Taking the deduction in a single tax year is known by its section in the tax code, as a Section 179 deduction.

Under Section 179, businesses that spend less than $800,000 a year on qualified equipment may write-off up to $250,000 in 2009. The rules are designed for small companies, so the $250,000 deduction phases out when a business purchases more than $800,000 in one year. (Companies cannot write off more than their taxable income).

(Click Here for the Section 179)

How attractive? For examples of savings for laser equipment purchased in 2009, click here.
In order to receive the tax break benefits, equipment needs to be purchased and in use in the 2009 calendar year. To help business meet these requirements, orders should be placed by the third quarter of this year to ensure there are no delays.

8 Reasons Smart Companies are Purchasing Laser Systems in 2009 Despite the Economy

It is no secret competition is greater in a down economy. Below are 8 reasons why the smartest companies are purchasing laser systems in order to improve their bottom line, gain market share and prepare themselves for the future.

1.) Gain a Competitive Advantage: When the economy is down, competition becomes greater. Earn market share by having the highest quality product results and leave your competition competing on a lower level.

2.) Large Stimulus Tax Benefits: Section 179 – The U.S. Government is stepping in and allowing large tax write offs on capital equipment through the end of 2009. The savings on the same system purchased in 2009 compared to 2010 could have a difference of up to $70,000.00.

3.) Warren Buffet Says Buy Low: Worldwide suppliers are giving discounts across the board. Equipment manufacturers can purchase components and lower manufacturing costs while passing the savings onto you.

4.) Eliminates Tooling and Consumable Costs: Laser systems have little to no consumables. Replacement parts, dyes and other component costs can add up over the year and become large hidden costs which will nickel and dime your bottom line throughout the year.

5.) Lower Production Costs: Laser systems greatly speed up your production process lowering your overall price per unit. This allows you to lower your final cost or increase your profit margin.

6.) Lower Operating Costs: New laser technology is more efficient and compact than other methods which allows you to reduce expensive floor space and eliminate unnecessary payroll expenses.

7.) Build Capital and Assets Instead of Liabilities: As your competition remains stagnant you can improve your production process and company worth with the addition of capital assets. When the economy improves, you’ll be steps ahead. Remember – leasing equipment will have a negative effect on your books.

8.) Virtually No maintenance: Systems out of commission will mean no production and no profits and when combined with expensive repair costs, these unexpected expenses may make or break a company. Using the latest generation laser technology, there will be no maintenance or replacement of expensive parts needed.

Despite the economy, smart companies are now purchasing laser systems in order to place themselves ahead of their competition. Right now upgrading production methods to the latest laser technology can save on energy costs, consumables, maintenance and increase throughput, yield and your bottom line. That said, it’s not hard to realize that now is the time to improve your production methods with a laser system. In troubled times, successful companies drive hard bargains and end up with extraordinary values which separate themselves from their competition. In other words, buy low and have a high return. While most go into panic mode, smart manufacturers go into shopping mode.

Your Plants Key to Survival - Get Lean

In today’s economic market manufacturers are focusing on ways to get Lean in order to not only be competitive, but to survive the downturn of the economy. The term Lean Manufacturing was coined in the 1980’s and its essence is to help companies identify and examine the specific tools needed to improve a plant's total productivity, profitability, safety and environmental performance.

For many, Lean represents a set of "tools" that assist in the identification and steady elimination of waste. As waste is eliminated quality improves while production time and cost are reduced. The core of Lean Manufacturing is to focus on eliminating any expense for any goal other than the creation of value for the end customer.

Top companies are utilizing these lean tools to improve the reliability and performance of their mechanical assets and overall operations. Implementation of just one idea could save a plant thousands, or even millions of dollars. However, seeing the big picture and being able to lead change and bring the plants entire team into the improvement process is key.

How Do You Get Lean?
When looking for effective Lean Manufacturing strategies for achieving measurable financial and productivity returns, one of the first places to examine is the manufacturing floor itself. Production managers need to identify equipment issues – determining if the machines are helping or hindering in production efforts. Maintenance costs and downtimes need to be examined and an effort to effectively utilize production floor space is needed as well. Additionally, the number of man hours needed to complete a job should be examined, and anomalies should be questioned. Each department in the company should be examined in a similar fashion. Simply focusing department by department on cost reducing and production increasing activities in order to improve overall customer value, is the core of lean manufacturing. However, it’s important to note that these efforts cannot be considered a one-time activity, but incorporated into the day-to-day workings of the company. Lean Manufacturing is an ongoing process and the bottom line to increasing your bottom line – continually question everything.

Lean Manufacturing in Action
Lean Manufacturing has long been the focus at Laser Photonics, the industry leader in developing fiber and CO2 laser systems. Their latest development in Lean Manufacturing technology is the Laser Photonics Excalibur Flexible Manufacturing Cell, specifically designed for any manufacturer or production facility that performs applications which entail laser cutting, welding or remote welding and sheet cutting or marking. Offering a complete turnkey solution for manufacturers and production facilities, this new concept introduces the idea of using one Fiber Laser Module to control the tasks of up to four different machines with the use of one optical switch.

Fiber is Lean
For manufacturers utilizing CO2 laser systems, simply replacing their CO2 laser with a fiber laser system alone will make huge advances towards lean manufacturing. When compared to CO2, Fiber lasers consume less power, have a longer diode life, require less maintenance, are more compact, they reduce production downtime due to quick installation and start up, feature increased production speed and output, are easily integrated into any production process and require no consumable gases. Fiber lasers are also easily upgradable unlike CO2 laser systems. As need for more power develops, new modules can be added to a fiber laser thereby increasing the power without replacing the entire system. Bottom line – Fiber lasers are Leaner than CO2.

Lean Machine - The Excalibur
With an eye towards significantly reducing the initial capital expenditure, decreasing the footprint, lowering operating costs, and decreasing maintenance costs, The Excalibur is nothing but lean. Additionally, this Flexible Manufacturing Cell increases throughput, and is leading the way in helping manufacturers increase their production speed in situations where system programming and training times are slowing down production and costing valuable time and money. While the laser is processing materials on one system, programming and training can take place on another system. Once the first job is finished, the laser can be switched via the optical switch to the next machine without any downtime.

Not only is The Excalibur lean, the machines it controls are lean as well. Though this flexible manufacturing cell can be custom built with different machines – most requests include a Titan Series™, a multipurpose fiber laser cutting machine and a Cobra FL welding robot. The Titan is equipped with a high-powered, energy efficient fiber laser and an advanced direct drive motion control platform. It also has a lighter weight design and the fastest cutting speed on the market for comparable systems. This system offers ultra low power consumption allowing for the lowest operating costs among all laser types. The Titan requires no optical system alignment, laser service or laser replacement parts making this system virtually maintenance free.
The Cobra FLS robot is ideally suited to integration and automation for welding applications. These custom-built systems offer increased flexibility, reliability, and quality. Optimum return on investment is guaranteed with these fully programmable machines.

Food Processing Equipment Manufacturers Cutting Production Steps with Fiber Laser Systems

As demand increases in the food processing machinery industry, so does the need to use technology to find more efficient ways to manufacture the processing machines. Most of the equipment for the food processing machinery industry is made from thin stainless steel which is cut and then processed. Some examples of these machines are drum mixers, industrial filters, slicers, food crushers and much more. There are two main challenges for these manufacturers, cutting speed and post processing.

Cutting Speed
Due to the high demand for these products the production facilities need to run 24 hours a day. Therefore, cycle time is a very important factor. Laser Photonics, a leader in industrial laser cutting equipment, has created the solution to this dilemma with its new high power fiber laser cutting machine, the Titan FLS 48. This machine is designed with the quick cutting of metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, mild steel and most other highly reflective metals. With the fastest cutting speed when compared to current machines, the Titan FLS 48 is able to increase these plants production speed while performing around the clock. This solves a major challenge for these manufacturers and allows them to grow with their customers and helps them keep up with demand.

Post Processing
The post processing stage is a completely separate process from the initial cutting. The post processing ensures all of the edges of the products are clean and safe for everyday use. When the stainless steel has been cut in the past, it was very difficult to guarantee the edges were completely smooth. This is extremely important especially in this industry because jagged edges, no matter how small, will accumulate bacteria, dust and other harmful materials that are dangerous when working with any type of food processing. The solution to this problem is also fiber laser technology. The Titan FLS 48 uses these high power lasers which make such a precise and clean cut that the edges do not need this post processing stage thereby speeding up production time for these manufacturers and improving their bottom line. Because only one laser machine is needed to complete these two processing stages at one time, it frees up more space in warehouses and uses less energy, helping manufacturers with their efforts to become more environmentally friendly.

This is just one way fiber laser technology changing production lines around the globe. Within the next decade, most food processing machinery manufacturers and food processing companies will be implementing different laser machines to improve their cutting and marking of their products.

Benefits of Laser Systems
1. Increases production Throughput
2. Unmatched Cutting and Marking Quality
3. Eliminates Post Processing Methods
4. Virtually No Maintenance
5. Compact Systems (Takes up little floor space)

New Software from Laser Photonics Makes Information Retrieval More Efficient for Laser Marking

Lake Mary, FL., Laser Photonics announced today a new automation utility for its FiberScan C3 software. Proprietary software used to run its laser marking systems. This new addition allows any machine running FiberScan C3 to retrieve data from an SQL server and make the data available for laser marking activities. Unlike database software used for marking in the past, this utility is unique because the SQL server performs data manipulation on a separate computer away from the laser system itself. During a laser marking cycle of a FiberScan C3 job, the utility can be triggered to run a particular configuration that defines the source location of the SQL server data and the destination server FiberScanC3.

For example, a firearms parts manufacturer will have to laser mark thousands of parts with various information (company, date, serial #), to meet ATF standards. Using this new utility, it only takes a few steps to mark, register and confirm the task.

Process Details:
Step 1: The laser job for the part executesStep 2: The laser job runs to the SQL utilityStep 3: The SQL utility attaches to the ATF database a retrieves the relevant
Step 3: informationStep 4: The laser mark is completed and confirmedStep 5: The laser job runs the SQL utility to confirm the mark. Triggering the SQL
Step 5: Server to reconfigure (updates) the database for the next job to begin.
The SQL commands can be a common “select statement”, execution of an SQL “stored procedure”, or a fully formed “SQL command statement”
This utility is most commonly used with the FiberTower™ Series.

Benefits of SQL Date Retrieval Utility:
• Can be used on any marking application

• SQL Server performs all tasks

• Fully tested on Microsoft SQL Server Express 2005

• Affordable

Laser Photonics is proud of this new utility and is confident it will be an added benefit to anyone who is currently or planning on using FiberScan C3 laser marking system and needing database retrieval software. This utility is now available and for more information please contact Laser Photonics at407-829-2613 or info@laserphotnics.com.
